The Declaration of Independence made America free from King George III. Before, English soldiers had reinforced the many taxes. The colonists protested, which resulted in MORE taxes and MORE soldiers. The colonists thought this was not fair because they wanted to be free! A congress with at least one man per colony was formed. Congress chose Thomas Jefferson to write the document that would declare America free. The Declaration of Independence stated that all men had life, liberty, and happiness. If the government took away these rights, the people could overthrow the government. The rebellious Declaration of Independence also named King George III a tyrant. Congress made only a few changes, and on July 4, 1776, they signed it, even though they knew it was treason. America was independent!
