Apostles and Disciples

1 Nephi 12:8-9 reads, “And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the twelve disciples of the Lamb, who are chosen to minister unto thy seed. And he said unto me: Thou rememberest the twelve apostles of the Lamb? Behold they are they who shall judge the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, the twelve ministers of thy seed shall be judged of them; for ye are of the house of Israel.” Now I wonder, what are the difference between apostles and disciples? Did the apostles’ name change to disciples after the other disciples died? The Bible Dictionary for apostle and disciple reads, “The word means “one sent forth.” It was the title Jesus gave to the Twelve whom He chose and ordained to be His closest disciples during His ministry on earth and whom He sent forth to represent Him after His Ascension into heaven,” and “A pupil or learner; a name used to denote (1) the Twelve, also called Apostles, (2) all followers of Jesus Christ,” respectively. So we know that all Christians are disciples. When talking about the Twelve in the Middle East, apostle and disciple are use interchangeably. The Twelve in the America are also sent forth to teach, so they are also apostles, in a sense. For the second question, we don’t know. 4 Nephi 1:14 simply says, “and the disciples of Jesus, whom he had chosen, had all gone to the paradise of God, save it were the three who should tarry; and there were other disciples ordained in their stead; and also many of that generation had passed away.”
