Axe

And again I say unto you, the Spirit saith: Behold, the ax is laid at the root of the tree; therefore every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be hewn down and cast into the fire, yea, a fire which cannot be consumed, even an unquenchable fire. Behold, and remember, the Holy One hath spoken it.

What tree and axe is Alma talking about? Remember Jacob 5, the parable of the vineyard? God will get rid of all the bad trees. He will cut them down. The axe is already at the tree, so the Lord is getting ready to cut down, or get rid of, the people of Zarahemla.

This parable is also mentioned in Luke 3:9, John 15:13, Doctrine and Covenants 97:7, 3 Nephi 27:11, Matthew 7:17-19, Jacob 5:3-77, Isaiah 1:8, Isaiah 5:7, 2 Nephi 15:7, Jerimiah 12:10, Matthew 20:2, Matthew 21:41, Luke 20:9, Luke 13:6, Jacob 5:3–77, Jacob 6:1–13, Alma 13:23, Doctrine and Covenants 21:9, Doctrine and Covenants 24:19, Doctrine and Covenants 33:4, Doctrine and Covenants 43:28, Doctrine and Covenants 101:56, Doctrine and Covenants 103:21, Doctrine and Covenants 107:96, Doctrine and Covenants 138:56, Genesis 49:22, Judges 9:12, Psalms 80:8, Isaiah 27:6, Isaiah 60:21, Isaiah 61:3, Jerimiah 2:21, Jerimiah 11:16, Matthew 15:13, 1 Nephi 10:12, 2 Nephi 3:5, Luke 6:45, Doctrine and Covenants 84:58, 3 Nephi 14:17-19, Jacob 6:1-3, and then I got tired of looking.

I think that it is interesting that this parable is mentioned so many times, yet the only full version of it is in the Book of Mormon!
