The Higher Law

“Behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and there will be no more doctrine given until after he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh. And when he shall manifest himself unto you in the flesh, the things which he shall say unto you shall ye observe to do.” reads 2 Nephi 32:6. Nephi has just told us what the Doctrine of Christ is. And then he says that there is something else! Once he comes, he will tell us more. And he did.

When Jesus come to the Nephites, he tells them His Doctrine–the same one that Nephi just told us–concluding with “Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine”. Then, a little while later, he gives us the new Doctrine: “… whosoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of his judgment … Agree with thine adversary quickly while thou art in the way with him, lest at any time he shall get thee, and thou shalt be cast into prison … whosoever looketh on a woman, to lust after her, hath committed adultery already in his heart … ye should deny yourselves of these things, wherein ye will take up your cross, than that ye should be cast into hell … whosoever shall put away his wife … causeth her to commit adultery; and whoso shall marry her who is divorced committeth adultery … swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair black or white; But let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; for whatsoever cometh of more than these is evil … ye shall not resist evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also; … if any man will … take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also … Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn thou not away … love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good.”

So what does the new doctrine say? He says multiple times that you shouldn’t even THINK about doing something that is wrong. Don’t get angry. Be agreeable, because if you’re not, it can cause arguments. Don’t lie rather then taking the punishment. Don’t marry twice, even if you’re divorced. Don’t swear. Don’t promise by something. Just say “yes” and “no”. Don’t try to stop someone from being mean to you. Just let it happen and ignore it. Give people extra when they take something. If they ask for something, give it to them. Give everybody what they want of you. Love, bless, and help the people who hate you. Pray for the people who are mean to you, because the Father does by letting you and the mean people have things like the sun and earth.

That’s a lot. And the old doctrine still applies. It’s hard to do everything. But that’s why we can repent.
