Trumpet

Posted on

O that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the trump of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people!

Alma 29:1

What’s the trump of God? Trump is an old word for trumpet. Trumpets are very loud, so God’s trumpet will be heard by everybody. The people are wicked, so Alma wants to borrow God’s trumpet and blow it so everybody hears it, aka everyone hears the gospel.

Where else is a trump or trumpet mentioned? Here are some:

at the last trump

1 Corinthians 15:52

At the last trump means at the last chance we have to listen to the trumpet.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God

1 Thessalonians 4:16

in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown

Isaiah 27:13

God shall blow the trumpet

Zechariah 9:14

When the Lord comes, everybody will hear him.

all men shall be awakened … when the trump shall sound

Mormon 9:13

trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised

1 Corinthians 15:52

When the trumpet sounds, everybody will hear it and stop being wicked (I interpret sleep meaning wickedness here). Or maybe it means that they will all be resurrected.

declare my gospel as with the voice of a trump

Doctrine and Covenants 24:12

lift up your voices as with the sound of a trump

Doctrine and Covenants 33:2

lift up thy voice like a trumpet

Isaiah 58:1

Set the trumpet to thy mouth

Hosea 8:1

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion

Joel 2:1

Declare the gospel loudly, like you are a trumpet.

trump shall sound … they shall come forth

Doctrine and Covenants 29:13

When He blows his trumpet, everybody will come to Him.

voice of the trumpet exceeding loud

Ezekiel 19:16

The trumpet is very loud.

shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets

Leviticus 23:24

On the Sabbath you remember how you shared the gospel.

he put a trumpet in every man’s hand

Judges 7:16

He did that so they can all share the gospel and people will hear them.

day of the trumpet and alarm

Zephiah 1:16

When God blows the trumpet, it might be a day of alarm if you aren’t ready yet! That’s why you need to be ready now.

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

1 Corinthians 14:8-40

Nobody. If you aren’t certain when you share the gospel, others might detect the uncertainty in your voice and not believe it since you don’t believe it. That’s why you need a testimony.
