Lehi’s vision has 6 things: a Great and Spacious building, a river, an Iron Rod, a wilderness, a mist, and a Tree. What do they represent? 1 Nephi 11 give us some answers: “What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw, that led to the tree? And I said unto them that it was the word of God … And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw? … And I said unto them that it was a representation of that awful hell, which the angel said unto me was prepared for the wicked.” But what is the Tree of Life? 1 Nephi 11:21-22 says: “Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw? And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God.” Later on, it says, “which led to the fountain of living waters, or to The Tree of Life,” and the living water is Jesus. 1 Nephi 8 says, “… a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world.” 1 Nephi 12 says, “And the large and spacious building, which thy father saw, is vain imaginations and the pride of the children of men.” It also says, “And the mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil.” So, the Tree of Life is Jesus, the Rod is the Word of God, the river is Hell, the wilderness is the world, the building is pride, and the mist is temptations. In our life that is, when you hold to the rod, you are obeying the gospel. When you give in to temptations or feel prideful, you are entering the building, falling in the water, or getting lost in the world. When you repent, you get back on the path. When you get back to Jesus, you are partaking of the fruit.
