Nephi and his brothers left Jerusalem three times. Why couldn’t they grab Ismael’s family when they got the plates? Or, why couldn’t they get the plates and Ishmael before they left the first time? We don’t know for sure. There were a few possibilities. When they left, they probably didn’t realize that they were going to go halfway across the world, so they didn’t think of getting the other things. I think Sariah needed to go through her trial of faith while the children were getting the plates. Probably, if she didn’t, her testimony wouldn’t be strong enough for the whole trip. Another possible reason is that the Lord wanted to see f they would continue doing what he asked and My final reason is that Ismael probably didn’t want to go at first. He probably asked where the rest of their family were. Hearing about their faith and keeping returning probably helped his testimony grow as well.
