Scripture Study talk

Scripture study has made a positive change in my life. I enjoy studying the scriptures on my own, with my family, and here at church. I can study the scriptures to learn, but the scriptures are also a tool to bring me closer to Christ by inviting the Spirit into my life. Studying the scriptures can also help me grow in unity with the people I study with. I like reading the scriptures to get instruction. They teach me how to act. Throughout the scriptures, there are small things people do that I can also do. A focused reading of […]

“Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ”

Yesterday I had the opportunity to perform Baptisms for the Dead at the temple for the first time. While I was there, I thought about what the prayer meant. There’s a line in it, “Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ.” “Commissioned” means “holding a rank conferred by a commission,” for example, an Army General. I am a Preist in the Aaronic Priesthood. My father laid his hands on my head to ordain me to this office, but it was actually from Jesus. Jesus commissioned me to be a priest. It’s pretty cool to have that responsibility from Jesus. There’s another […]

As a missionary, what is your duty in helping others find and partake of the fruits of the gospel?

1: What Is My Purpose as a Missionary? – Preach My Gospel We need to extend the offer of the restored gospel to everyone. Many people aren’t in the church just because they don’t know about it. It’s our job to make sure everyone knows what’s available. It’s not up to us if they decide to join or not. They still have thier own agency. And God will judge thier behavior in the church, not us. Our job is simply to let everyone have the opportunity to come to Christ. It’s up to them if they take it. This is […]

Lehi’s Vision notes

These are my notes on the story of Lehi’s Vison, 1 Nephi 8:9-24. Lehi wanted his family to have the fruit too. The fruit represents the gospel. He wanted to share it because the gospel makes us joy. Joy above all else, because the gospel is the reason we came to earth so we are happy to understand the plan of why we’re here and where we’re going and all the tiny details in that plan like the fact that Jesus will be here caring for us in everything. We’re all a heavenly family, so when Lehi said he wanted […]

Daddy, Donna, and Nephi notes

These are my notes on the article Daddy, Donna, and Nephi from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland in the September 1976 Ensign: we should dig deep into books we read. it shouldn’t be easy to just skim it as fast as we can. we should think about it. especially with the BofM, god’s book, organized in the perfect way for everyone. if we dig into what exactly it meant,s we can understand it better. and it shows the lord that we care. if the lord knows we care then he will give us revalation. and the more knowledge we gain in […]

Sacrament Meeting Talk on Carthage Jail

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Paul Reid, and I have had the ability to spend the last few days at Youth Conference in Nauvoo, which was such an amazing experience for me, and I’m sure also for many of the other youth that attended. I met lots of new friends and I look forward to interacting with them more at other stake activities throughout the coming months. One of my favorite experiences over the past few days was at Carthage Jail. It was a place where I could feel the Spirit very strongly as […]

Favorite Scripture Sacrament Meeting Talk

One of my favorite scriptures is in James 1: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” And what that means is if we need anything, we can ask, and the Lord will answer us. He won’t laugh at us (or “upbraideth”) if we ask something silly. But the two following verses might be even more important to know: “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind […]

Brother of Jared

What was the Brother of Jared’s name? Does it ever say? Well, it was the custom of the people of Nephi to call their lands, and their cities, and their villages, yea, even all their small villages, after the name of him who first possessed them Alma 8:7 And the Jaredites called the name of the place Moriancumer Ether 2:13 So was his name Moriancumer? It’s possible. But the custom was the Nephites’ custom, not the Jaredites’. Could they have had the same custom? Probably. How did the tradition begin? And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare […]

Geneology

Ether 1:6-32 is Ether’s genealogy. Why do we need to know all that? There is a similar time in 1 Chronicles 5-9, which are pretty much all just the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren and ectara of Joseph. That proves to be important later, when it came to pass that my father, Lehi, also found upon the plates of brass a genealogy of his fathers; wherefore he knew that he was a descendant of Joseph; yea, even that Joseph who was the son of Jacob, who was sold into Egypt, and who was preserved by the hand of the Lord, […]

Faithless Prayer

and my soul had been poured out in prayer unto my God all the day long for them; nevertheless, it was without faith, because of the hardness of their hearts Mormon 3:12 Mormon didn’t have faith in the Nephites. But James said But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. James 1:6-7 Does that mean, that if Mormon prayed in faith, would the Nephites have repented? Maybe. But […]

And these Gadianton robbers, who were among the Lamanites, did infest the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof began to hide up their treasures in the earth; and they became slippery, because the Lord had cursed the land, that they could not hold them, nor retain them again. Mormon 1:18 I don’t think that Mormon means that the treasures literally “became slippery”. I think he only means that figuratively. When something is slippery, it slides out of your hands easily. My guess is the Lord made it so the treasures slid out of their possession easily. How? Well, maybe the […]

Why I Want to Learn

I want to learn so I can be able to live a good life. That means: I want to be able to have a good job that supports a family. If I didn’t learn, I couldn’t get a good job. I want to, when I have a question, be able to answer it. I will always have questions that I need to answer. I will be able to answer them because I would know the answer. I want to be able to help others learn. I enjoy teaching people. Similarly to the above, if someone else has a question for […]

Marred

But behold, the life of my servant shall be in my hand; therefore they shall not hurt him, although he shall be marred because of them. Yet I will heal him, for I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil. 3 Nephi 21:10 Who is Jesus talking about? He’s talking about Joseph Smith, who would translate these words almost 2,000 years later. That means that Joseph Smith might have known that he was going to be martyred. But maybe he didn’t understand who it was talking about, although I don’t think that’s likely. […]

We Need To Care

We need to care about other people because they are also people. They also have feelings. They matter! And as long as we’re sharing this earth with them, we might as well be nice to them. If we weren’t sharing the earth with anybody else, we would have no purpose, and life would be really boring. Plus, if we aren’t nice to them, they might not be nice to us or help us if we need help. We are all equal, so why don’t we treat each other like we are? We need to understand that other people might have […]

Data Science

Data science turns data into knowledge. Many people think that data science is about making complex models, writing code, or parsing large amounts of data, but it is not. It is making predictions and very educated guesses. It is finding trends and patterns. That is when people need to make complex models and write code and parse large amounts of data. A data scientist’s goal is to extract information from data, and nobody cares what tools they use. A data scientist would write code to find very complicated patterns that humans could never detect. Sometimes they would identify trends in […]

Wickedness

Starting in 3 Nephi 2, the people begin to be very wicked, even after they see the sign of Christ’s birth! A few chapters later, they repent, but soon, most of the people go wicked again. There are lots and lots of wars, contentions, robbing, murders, etcetera, and etcetera. But maybe there’s a point to all this. If they weren’t righteous enough to stay believers after they saw an amazing sign, then perhaps they weren’t righteous enough to see Christ. And behold, that great city Moronihah have I covered with earth, and the inhabitants thereof, to hide their iniquities and […]

My topic was “the purpose and blessings of the priesthood”. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf shared this story a few years ago: [Our branch president] invited me into a small classroom, and there he extended a call to me to serve as deacons quorum president. “This is an important position,” he said, and then he took his time and described why. He explained what he and the Lord expected of me and how […]

And they did travel to an exceedingly great distance, insomuch that they came to large bodies of water and many rivers. Helaman 3:3-4 It then goes on to describe all about what they did there. But how would they know? Well, that’s not the first time people went to the land northward. And the first ship did also return, and many more people did enter into it; and they also […]

Alma 60:16 Why is he talking about the king-men? Pahoran can’t send help due to the king-men, but how would Moroni know that? Well, he doesn’t. But why mention them then? He’s reminding Pahoran of the last time the king-men attacked. He’s saying “the Lord gave us these afflictions because we were […]

Pull Down And Level

And it came to pass that Moroni commanded that his army should go against those king-men, to pull down their pride and their nobility and level them with the earth, or they should take up arms and support the cause of liberty. Alma 51:17 What does “to pull down their pride and their nobility and level them with the earth” mean? Pull down their pride means to take off their pride; to stop them from being proud. They are proud because their parents are important people. They are proud because that means that they would be kings. Now those who […]
